RHODE ISLAND TEA PARTY STANDS STRONG AGAINST NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE
House Bill #5575, National Popular Vote is scheduled to be voted out of the Judiciary Committee this Tuesday, June 11 2013, and then voted on by the entire RI House of Representatives, Thursday, June 13, 2013. We must OPPOSE it! Last year, a similar bill never made it to the floor largely due to your phone calls and emails to your representatives. Your legislators listened and it made a huge difference! It has been learned that leadership in the House is "allowing" legislators to vote freely on this issue without the usual "arm twisting" and that a substantial block of Democrats either oppose NVP or are undecided. This is why it is critical that we make this effort again within the next three days.
As a refresher, here are some reasons why National Popular Vote is bad:
Assumes voters are virtually alike nationwide, having the same needs
Disproportionate focus on large cities
European-style multi-party chaos
Interests of small states like RI would be ignored or considered irrelevant
Fraud in any part of the country affects outcome
Passing NPV legislation would take away the "checks and balances" on the power of government
Folks, this is about freedom and our ability as individuals to protect ourselves from an all-powerful, central government. Find your legislator's contact info on the General Assembly website and call them before this Thursday to urge them to OPPOSE House Bill #5575.
