The 2013 legislative session is history but the damage they have done to our State and to the future of our children is evident. Of all the criticisms that can be leveled at the General Assembly, perhaps the most insulting to the RI taxpayer is the failure to be bold, the failure to be innovative, the failure to stop the "business as usual" mentality that seems to dominate our statehouse every spring. Clichéd phrases like "moving the needle" might sound nice, but the tangible effect to improve the quality of life for Rhode Islanders is virtually non-existent without the legislation that will make a real difference.
Until proposals like sales tax reduction/repeal, education reform/school choice, E-verify, repeal of the master lever, thorough investigation of 38 Studios, municipal pension reform, and most important, REAL, free-market based help for the Ocean State's beleaguered business community are not merely discussed, considered, or even debated in committee, but actually signed into law, it seems inevitable that RI will continue to move toward increased statism and bankruptcy. All it takes to break free from that self-imposed prison is the will, and the courage for the General Assembly to act.
