PRESS RELEASE: The RI Tea Party Responds to questions regarding support for a State Constitutional Convention.
May 14, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Providence, RI - In response to a number of inquiries, the Rhode Island Tea Party made public today their position on a statewide constitutional convention.
In a statement, Michael Puyana, Rhode Island Tea Party president stated, "A constitutional convention would be an effective tool to reign in the power of the Rhode Island government and establish a freer and more American-principled state. As we saw over the years with the Rhode Island government irresponsibly handling the hard earned money of the citizens in failed ventures like 38 Studios, ending such practices could be greatly aided by having a constitutional convention."
Puyana continued by saying, "Unfortunately though, the reality today is that it appears as if far too many of Rhode Island's voters are apathetic to such assaults on our freedoms and our children's future. Due to this unfortunate truth, the Rhode Island Tea Party is not confident the special interests who wield so much power in the Ocean State would fight against such assaults on our liberty, but rather continue to impose their will on our taxpayers and law-abiding citizens."
Therefore, it is the view of the Rhode Island Tea Party that until the corruption and corporatism as well as the apathy we see today are considerably reduced, a constitutional convention is not a favorable option.
Nevertheless, if a constitutional convention is initiated in our state, the Rhode Island Tea Party will be very well prepared to use such an opportunity to fight for the values our country was founded.
